FAQ
1. What does ‘Christian Agnostic’ mean?
Bart Ehrman, a famous biblical scholar, describes himself as an ‘agnostic atheist’ – he says he believes there is no God, but he doesn’t really know that for certain.
In my case, being a ‘christian agnostic’ means that I believe in God as revealed in Christianity, but I do admit that I cannot know everything I believe.
It also means I hold a good deal of scepticism and uncertainty about some traditional dogmas, as well as about my own convictions. I keep my faith open for discussion, for investigation, for philosophical, historical or psychological criticism. It means I am not afraid of change.
2. What kind of Christian are you?
Erm… I’m not going to tick or cross a number of ‘Do you believe in XYZ literally?’ questions here. Let’s say I was raised Catholic; then my teenage flirt with Protestantism had led me into a full-blown crazy-evangelical phase, the grounds of which I eventually started to contest and rethink. What kind of Christian am I now? One trying his best and relying on grace to do the rest.
Dear… I swear I didn’t intend the previous sentence to rhyme.
3. What kind of agnostic are you?
I’m agnostic about my agnosticism. I don’t know if I even deserve the term ‘agnostic’. I tried to ask proper agnostics about that, but they, well, don’t know either.
I accept limitations of the human mind. I know we won’t be able to grasp certain things with it. I still want to search with the intention of finding, not just searching for its own sake.
I’m comfortable with parts of my worldview being just assumptions. Every worldview needs them, and I’m only not comfortable with holding assumptions without being aware of what they are.
4. Were you inspired by the 1963 book ‘The Christian agnostic’ and its author Leslie Weatherhead?
No, I first heard about the book and L. Weatherhead only after I came up with this website. Now I guess I’ll eventually have to read it.
5. What is the purpose of your blog?
To help myself with systematising all the stuff in my head, to let it be challenged by others, and hopefully to help some people on a similar journey.
I also dream of getting rich by selling ‘The Christian Agnostic’ mugs and T-shirts. Wait for it.
